Scholarship, Research & Alumni Fellowship for Excellence Awards Distribution Ceremony 2024
Like previous years GAABESU Scholarship, Alumni Fellowship for Excellence Award, Research Award and Debate Award Distribution Ceremony was successfully held on March 23, 2024 at Alumni Seminar Hall, IIEST, Shibpur.

The program was conducted by Prosenjit Chakraborty. He welcomed the dignitaries to the dais. Since GAABESU President Amitabha Dutta was out of town, the program was presided by Working President Arabinda Roy. GAABESU Working President gave the welcoming address to all the guests, alumni & students present.
Though the Director-IIEST initially agreed to come, but finally expressed his inability to attend. As such, no one officially from Institute, was present. The program was heavily attended by Alumni (more than 30). Initially, student attendance was also poor and hence, we had to formally start 10 min late, but ultimately, most of the recipients turned-up. We were informed that the classes were suspended for 9-days from the day before and hence, outstation students might have gone out. Then also, net student absenteeism was less than 15%. Actually, the hall was completely full.
At the start of the award program, Lt. Col. Anjan Kumar Ghosh talked about the GAABESU Scholarship Programme, explained in details the background and purpose of the Scholarship awarded by GAABESU since 1999. He specially mentioned the contribution of the Global Coordinator of Scholarship Sub Committee Mr. Rajdeep Dutta (resident of UAE) and original initiator of Alumni Scholarship Programme Dr. Swapan Saha (resident of USA) both are alumni from 1988 EE batch, to make the overall scholarship program a success. He further expressed his sincere hopes that the recipient students will also feel for the needy students and extend meaningful help to them in future. Thereafter the Scholarship award distribution ceremony started, at first Research awards followed by Excellence (AFE) Award then Debate Award and lastly Scholarships. Prosenjit Chakraborty called all recipients one by one. Vinod Singh also joined for a part of the announcements. All present dignitaries handed over the awards to the recipients. From last year a new AFE award has been instituted by the Batch of 1984 and many alumni, present from that batch, joined on the stage to hand over the award to the recipient. Some of the Donors or their representatives were also present and handed over the respective awards to the recipient.
During the ceremony, Prosenjit Chakraborty mentioned about Late Amlan Basu (1987 CE), when the scholarship instituted in memory of him was awarded. Prabir Neogi, who joined from Canada over ‘Zoom’ link, also shared some anecdotes about his father, who was also a B E College alumnus. GAABESU also awarded 4 dedicated Scholarships for the 1st year students, jointly instituted by Dr. Arun Deb & Sri Debendra Narayan Chattopadhyay.
During the program, students were asked to come over the dais to give their views on GAABESU activities. Some students, including GS of Student Senate came over and gave their views including the problems they are facing. HoD-Civil, Prof. Chaitali Roy also joined the discussions and described her experience in these matters. Many alumni also participated in the discussions. However, since our first task-in-hand was to complete the scheduled program as well as paucity of available time, the discussions were cut short. Also, it was felt that this was not the proper forum to discuss some of the issues raised.
The ceremony concluded with vote of thanks to the chair given by GAABESU Joint Secretary Mr. Vinod Singh. He thanked all present dignitaries, EC members, Students and IIEST Authority to make the Scholarship distribution Ceremony successfully.
After the program a small refreshment was handed-over to all students and present dignitaries.
