USA
Most university sessions start in Aug/Sept of any year. So you need to prepare yourself around the same time of the previous year.
Take GRE (Fee $205) /GMAT($250) and TOEFL(Fee $170) test for Masters and PhD degrees. You are allowed to send your score to only 4 Universities. If you want to send your score to other Universities, you need to $27 per University.
Select the Universities from the Internet. Choose 20 at the beginning and then make it to 10 after critically analyse them in an excel file. Note down positives and negatives.
Select your department.
Select the professors and send email to them describing your plan of study. But do not expect that they will reply back.
Application Fees are usually $50 to $100 per university. So the total expense will around $1000 (assuming $100 per universities). You can apply through Internet.
Be prepare to submit for other SOP (Statement of Purpose), Transcript, Bank Statement etc.
If you can join as Teaching/Research Assistant you might get the full funding for your higher study otherwise you need to pay for your study. Usually it is $45000/year including tuition, fees, room & board.depending on the University.
For Masters degree you need to pay otherwise for PhD you might get some sort of assistant-get ship. If you are lucky you might get assistant-ship for Master degree too.
If you are selected by the multiple Universities then choose where to go depending on your requirements and benefits.
After selecting a University ask them to send I 20 document to apply for US Visa.
Apply for visa. Be prepare yourself for Visa interview. Internet will help you.
After getting the visa buy air ticket from Internet (cheapoair.com or momondo.com) or from a travel agent. One way Air fee is around $800 to $1000 depending on the place in USA. Sometimes more depending on the availability of the tickets. If you get a good deal in the above mentioned sites then go to respective airlines site and buy the ticket.
Try to land at your selected University 7 days before the Orientation. Usually Class starts after 2/3 days of the Orientation.
CANADA
The process is exactly same as USA. The only difference you need to take ILTS examination instead of TOEFL. As Canadian dollar value is less than USA, then the study expense will be little cheaper in Indian currency.
