APPEAL TO ALUMNI FOR SUPPORTING THE PRESERVATION OF HERITAGE AND DEVELOPMENT OF IIEST SHIBPUR
Dear Esteemed Alumni of B.E. College / BESU / IIEST Shibpur,
As alumni, we all carry within us a deep emotional bond with our beloved Alma Mater. The memories of our student days, the iconic buildings, the Clock Tower, the lakeside surroundings, and the academic atmosphere remain an inseparable part of our lives, irrespective of where we are today across the globe.
Today, you have the opportunity to support three important developmental initiatives that are both heritage-sensitive and academically meaningful.
- Rehabilitation of the Historic Clock Tower Wooden Roof & Inside Floors
The Clock Tower stands as a proud symbol of our institution’s glorious heritage for more than 170 years. Constructed with brick masonry, steel framing, and sloped wooden roofing, now urgently requires rehabilitation and structural repair, particularly of its deteriorated wooden roof system and associated components. This repair will also protect the historic clock and its machinery from increasing rainwater ingress. Estimated Cost: Approximately INR 20 Lakhs (Excluding scaffolding and associated access arrangements)
Any donation over $500/Rs. 50,000 will have the donor’s name recognized on the Clock Tower structure.
- Beautification and Landscaping Around the Clock Tower
We also propose to develop and beautify the surrounding area of approximately 1,200 square metres around the Clock Tower to create a serene and aesthetically pleasing heritage precinct worthy of the institution’s legacy. Estimated Cost: Approximately INR 15 Lakhs
Any donation over $500/Rs. 50,000 will have the donor’s name recognized on a structure within the precinct.
- Improvement of Acoustic System in the Civil Engineering Seminar Hall
The Seminar Hall of the Civil Engineering Department has long served as an important venue for lectures, seminars, academic discussions and alumni interactions across multiple departments. We propose to modernize and significantly improve its acoustic and audio system infrastructure to support better academic and professional events. Estimated Cost: Approximately INR 10 Lakhs
Any donation over $500/Rs. 50,000 will have the donor’s name recognized on the seminar hall walls.
The total estimated expenditure for these three initiatives is approximately INR 45 Lakhs, excluding certain associated implementation costs.
The Institute is in the process of completion of a Master Plan of the campus. Once approved, the Master Plan will open up significant opportunities for alumni participation in the future development of the campus through various heritage, infrastructure, academic, and environmental improvement initiatives.
The Clock Tower and its surrounding area have been specifically identified for conservation and development within the proposed Master Plan. The rehabilitation and beautification projects proposed by GAABESU are therefore fully aligned with the Institute’s long-term vision and development strategy. This alignment is also one of the reasons why the Director has encouraged GAABESU to take up these important heritage conservation and campus improvement initiatives. In addition to following prudent governance of the donated funds, the institute leadership has also committed to maintaining these renovated facilities.
We therefore earnestly appeal to all alumni across the world to come forward generously and participate in this collective endeavour. Contributions of any amount will be deeply appreciated and acknowledged. Alumni batches, groups, chapters, and individuals may also consider sponsoring specific components of these projects.
